Why Every Couple Should Consider Becoming a Big Couple
February 18, 2025

When Zoe and Jared signed up to be a Big Couple with Big Brothers Big Sisters KC, they had no idea how much the experience would shape them—not just as mentors, but as partners. Hear about their journey and why they think other couples should consider taking this step together.

What made you both want to sign up to become a Big Couple?

Zoe’s journey with Big Brothers Big Sisters started back in high school with BBBS of Cloud County. “I was a Big for two and a half years before heading to college, where I continued with BBBS of Ellis County. Now, I’m a Big Couple with my husband, Jared, through BBBSKC! Giving back through this program has always been important to me.”

Unlike Zoe, Jared had never been involved with BBBS before, but I’ve always had a passion for coaching and mentoring. He wasn’t sure how to balance that passion with a full-time job, but BBBS turned out to be the perfect fit. “Becoming a Big Couple gave us the opportunity to make an impact together, in a way that worked for both of us.”

What has being a Big taught you both?

“It has taught us patience, as we’ve learned that meaningful connections take time to build and that trust is earned through small, consistent moments. Consistency has been key—not just for our Little, but for ourselves—showing up, following through, and being present in each interaction. We’ve also gained a deeper understanding of teamwork, learning how to support each other in this shared role. Whether it’s planning outings, navigating challenges, or celebrating milestones, we lean on each other’s strengths to create the best experience for our Little.

And perhaps one of the biggest lessons has been delayed gratification. Impact doesn’t always happen overnight, but the small moments—watching our Little gain confidence, open up, or accomplish something new—remind us why this commitment is so important.”

Why did you want to share this experience together?

Giving back together is incredibly rewarding. It gives us a shared purpose, helps us relate to each other in new ways, and lets us bounce ideas off one another. Plus, it’s twice as much fun!”

How has this experience impacted your relationship?

“Not only do we show up for our Little, but we show up for each other. We plan outings together, experience the joy of being Bigs together, and get out and about in ways we wouldn’t have on our own.

Plus, if you really want to get to know your partner, do some fifth-grade math homework with them. Being a Big Couple has challenged us in new (and unexpected) ways, but it’s also brought us closer—whether we’re solving word problems or figuring out how to make the biggest impact together!”

Would you recommend becoming a Big Couple to other couples?

“Yes! Being a Big couple adds some flexibility to the traditional match and provides built-in support and guidance—both for your Little and for each other.”
